8 dead, 10 missing in twin landslides in Maco (11:18 a.m.)

DAVAO — Eight people were killed, nine were injured while ten more are still missing when two landslides hit a Barangay in Maco, Compostela Valley in a span of 12 hours.

Office of Civil Defense 11 director Liza Mazo said that as of their latest account, 18 houses were totally damaged with 70 families displaced due to the twin landslides that hit Barangay Masara.

The first slide happened Saturday, September 6, around 3:30 in the afternoon. The landslide that hit the barangay proper was said to have been triggered by heavy rains. In the said landslide, five persons were reported killed while eight others were injured.

The following day, around three in the morning, another wave of landslide occurred in the same place that virtually rendered the roads impassable to all types of vehicles. Three more persons were killed in the second slide while another one was injured. A total f ten persons were missing as of press time.

The OCD 11 identified five of the eight fatalities as Esteban Mahilit, 59 years old; Ma. Christine Labor, 4; Ma. Teresa Labor, 1; Rosemarie Labor, 28; and Harold Sanchez.

Seven of the nine injured are meanwhile identified as Pagay Pablo, 9 years old; Eduardo Lazaro, 65; Estrella Magnanao, 52; Eugene Peraliz, 17; Ynaya Sotero, 37; Edwin Romeo, 36; and Jeremy Abuol, 28.

The names of the missing have not been divulged yet but one of them is said to be the barangay captain of Masara who was among the first ones who responded to the first landslide.

The evacuees are temporarily housed at the Masara elementary school. Rescue efforts are ongoing as of this writing.

This is not the first time that a landslide hit the said barangay. On August 7, 2007, a landslide also affected the village where 10 people were killed. The barangay is near a mining site. (BOT/Sun.Star Davao/Sunnex)
