Explosive materials seized (4:12 p.m.)

MANILA — Three pales of landmine materials were discovered by elements of the Army’s 76th Infantry Battalion through the aid of civilians, a military spokesman reported Sunday.

First Lieutenant Celeste Frank Sayson, spokesman of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division, said Victor Orijuela, chairman of San Vicente, Macalelon town in Quezon reported to the military the explosive materials.

Sayson said Orijuela approached the commander of the Bravo Company of the 76th IB after one of his constituents saw the contraband last Wednesday night.

Upon learning, Sayson said soldiers accompanied barangay officials and moved towards Sitio Bunga where the three pales of landmine materials were discovered.

Major General Roland Detabali, 2nd IB commander, believes the discovered landmines are to be used by communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels against government troops in the province.

“Civilian support is our edge in combating insurgency. This incident is a manifestation that the populace are fed up by violence brought about by the insurgent’s armed struggle,” said Detabali. (VR/Sunnex)
