Marky Cielo dies (5:25 p.m.)
MANILA — Young actor Marky Cielo was found dead inside his room at his house in Antipolo City on Sunday. He was 20.
Initial report said that Marky died in his sleep. His mother was about to wake him up for an appointment but the actor sadly never got up.
As of press time, the real cause of Marky’s untimely death has not yet established.
Marky gained popularity after being proclaimed as “Ultimate Sole Survivor” in the third season of GMA-7’s reality show “StarStruck”.
He appeared in several GMA-7 shows such as “Encantadia”, “Fantastikids”, “Bakekang”, “Asian Treasures”, “Boys Next Door”, “Kaputol ng Isang Awit”, and “Codename: Asero”.
He was meanwhile much known as Zaido Green in Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan. (JRDB/Sunnex)

the first time I heard the news was from showbiz central right after when Pia Guanio announced the victory of Manny Pacquiao’s fight. I was really shocked. I watched Sis and I was crying while they interviewed some of his close friends. I felt like I was one of them. Actually, the first time I saw Marky in television, my impression is that he is really a nice guy and very sincere one. And I guess first impression lasts. After hearing all his close friends messages, I’m sure he is the type of person I thought he was.

The Boknoy I knew

ALL of us when we heard Boknoy’s, er, Marky Cielo’s sudden death were shock.
Marky was always Boknoy to us, the small artists community in Butuan city where he was born and grew up.
Marky’s father, Bobby, who is partly Chinese, was an acknowledged theater artist, being a director, actor, painter, comic and humble friend. His mother, Mildred Cadaweng, from the Mountain Province of Benguet used to head a local NGO committed to support the indigenous peoples of Agusan and Surigao.
Bobby hails from Iligan City and he met Mildred in Butuan in the mid80’s when their offices had a partnership project for their respective constituents. They were later married in Mildred’s hometown where the ritual included a wedding dance of groom and bride. Bobby wore a Barong Tagalog to Mildred’s fine tribal suite.
When Marky was born, he was fondly called Boknoy. Being the first born, he got all the attention from everyone. He looked after Bobby who was naturally on the Chinese side. I remember Bobby constantly bringing Boknoy during community theater plays. It is no wonder then where Marky got his good acting genes.
The following year, Marky’s sister was born and she was called Bonsai. Marky was the shy type and Bonsai was not. She was constantly bubbling. A lot of us would not be surprise if Bonsai becomes the ‘artista’. She was talkative and very friendly. She looked like the young Judy Ann Santos then.
Funny, but it was years later that I learned I was one of Marky’s godfathers. It was Fe Remotigue, one of Mindanao’s leading playwrights who told me so. Bobby must have forgotten to mention that to me when Marky was baptized.
Through the years, I only occasionally saw Boknoy and Bonsai. In their elementary grades, they would tag along with Bobby while Mildred was out in the field. Marky was alway shy, you never hear him speak unless you talk to him. He was polite and had that humble smile. The first time I saw him on TV I thought he was not telegenic. In person, he was good-looking in a unique way. His handsomeness is the kind that doesn’t shine instantly but one that grows.
Marky never became a stage actor when it would have been easy for him as his father was the head of a creative theatre department of a cultural NGO. But he involved himself in Visual Arts. He was so good that he won a regional art competition and later became an assistant summer art teacher.
His teacher and mentor, Bada Torralba, became a family friend and he and Bonsai were always involved in many creative endeavors. “But I have never seen him dance,” said Bada, “He was not the type who will be on stage. He was so shy.” When she saw him dance on TV, she could not help laugh. There goes the silent boy, she told herself.
Who would expect a non-artistahin teenager emerged a winner in the nationwide Startstruck contest? I never did. Everytime I saw him on TV, I thought he was not telegenic enough to garner votes from the audience. But people, like Lorna Tolentino would praise him and I would sigh a relief. Maybe the kid stood a chance after all.
During the contest, some of our friends complained Marky was never made to mention that he was a Mindanaoan, too. The TV people wanted to project him solely as a son of a Luzon indigenous tribe. Well, that is showbiz spin.
I wasn’t fond of voting but on the final week, I decided to. I was sort of guilty that I would not support my godson. When Marky won, I called up Bobby and he was of course ecstatic. Mildred too was in high-heavens. Bonsai even appeared on TV to congratulate him.
Marky or Boknoy left us and it was such a sad surprise.
