Paper: Singapore lawmaker set on fire (3:31 p.m.)
SINGAPORE — A newspaper says Singapore lawmaker Seng Han Thong was set on fire by a 70-year-old attacker who was upset he didn’t receive a traditional cash handout for Lunar New Year.
The Straits Times newspaper said Monday that Seng, 59, was burned on his head, arms and upper body when Ong Kah Chua, 70, poured gasoline on him and ignited it.
The paper says a 69-year-old community leader also was burned in the Sunday attack.
The newspaper says Ong was arrested and charged with two counts of causing grievous hurt. It says Ong was a former taxi driver who has been a patient several times at the city-state’s Institute of Mental Health.
The newspaper says Seng was attacked after handing out cash in red envelopes - a Lunar New Year tradition in Chinese societies - to poor residents at a community center. (AP)
