Mother, daughter missing in floods (10:04 a.m.)
KIDAPAWAN — An official says powerful flash floods have swept away riverside houses in a southern Philippine village and that a mother and her teenage daughter are missing and feared dead.
Village chairman Mario Calayco says heavy rain Monday evening caused the Kabacan River to overflow in Poblacion village on the island of Mindanao, forcing about 100 people to flee to high ground.
Calayco said Tuesday the mother and daughter probably drowned when they were carried away in the floods. The father managed to escape before their house was destroyed.
He says the displaced have taken shelter at the elementary school.
Recent heavy rains have triggered a series of landslides, tidal surges and flash floods throughout the archipelago. (AP)
