Moderate earthquake shakes Turkey (4:39 p.m.)

ANKARA, Turkey — Turkey’s seismology center says a moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.0 has shaken a province in western Turkey.

There are no reports of any injuries.

The Istanbul-based Kandilli Observatory says the epicenter was the town of Simav, in Kutahya province. The quake struck at 7:28 a.m. (0528 GMT) Tuesday.

Simav’s Mayor Riza Ozdemir says the quake caused cracks to buildings and broke windows. He says people ran out of homes in panic and many are afraid to return.

Earthquakes are frequent in Turkey, much of which lies atop the active North Anatolian fault. In 1999, two devastating quakes killed about 18,000 people in northwestern Turkey. (AP)
