GOVERNMENT troops rescued Tuesday the seven-year old son of a banker a few hours after two gunmen flagged down their vehicle and snatched the boy in the southern Philippine province of Basilan.

Basilan Vice Governor Al Rasheed Sakkalahul said soldiers clashed with the gunmen and rescued the boy identified as Alson Porticos in the village of Tinog in Lamitan City.

Sakkalahul said the kidnappers were wounded and captured by soldiers.

The victim was with his sister Shalinnete Porticos and their driver Alejandro Porticos when two armed men stopped them on a highway around 12 noon while they were on the way to school in Sunrise Village, Isabela City.

The boy’s sister managed to escape and told her father about the kidnapping.

Earlier, Basilan authorities led by Governor Jum Akbar declared an all-out war against kidnappers in the province.

Defiant Abu Sayyaf militants are still holding a nine-year old boy, Chester Gruta; a lending firm employee, Leah Patris; three government teachers - Freires Quizon, Janette delos Reyes and Rafael Mayorada, and Sri Lankan peace advocate Umar Jaleel. (Sunnex)
