Philippine inflation picks up in February (12:25 p.m.)

MANILA, Philippines — Inflation in the Philippines picked up to 7.3 percent in February, driven by a rise in the cost of food, beverages, and tobacco, the government said Thursday.

The National Statistics Office said the inflation rate went up from 7.1 percent in January and 5.4 percent a year earlier.

For the whole year, the government said it expects inflation to average 3.9 percent - down from 9.3 percent in 2008.
