10 die in Vietnam bus crash, including 9 Russians (4:46 p.m.)
HANOI, Vietnam — Police say a speeding bus fell off a cliff in southern Vietnam, killing at least 10 people. Nine were Russian tourists.
Eight people died instantly, and two died later in the hospital. Fourteen others remain hospitalized, some in critical condition, said Nguyen Van Lam, a police officer in Binh Thuan province.
An initial investigation showed the bus was speeding down a hill before veering off a cliff near Dalat, a well-known tourist destination in the Central Highlands, Lam said.
There were at least 26 people on the bus, most of whom were Russian.
Traffic accidents are the third-leading cause of death in Vietnam. Last year, about 12,000 people were killed on the country’s roads, almost 35 deaths a day, one of the world’s highest rates. (AP)
