Death toll from Uganda building collapse reaches 8 (5:53 p.m.)
KAMPALA, Uganda — Police say they have pulled eight bodies from the rubble of a collapsed building in Uganda’s capital and the death toll is expected to rise.
Rescue teams were still trying to find survivors after the two-story commercial building in Kampala collapsed Friday with about 50 people inside. Police spokeswoman Judith Nabakooba says 18 people have been discovered alive and received treatment.
Most of them had serious injuries, Nabakooba said. Some trapped inside used cell phones to call family members. The building collapsed after nearby construction work loosened its foundations.
Contractors in Uganda often use shoddy materials and bribe planning officials and inspectors. President Yoweri Museveni has promised those responsible would be held accountable. (AP)
