Coop summit to focus on entrepreneurship

ENTREPRENEURSHIP is the focus in this year's 11th National Cooperative Summit, Elsie Remonte, summit's national coordinator, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro on Friday.
Remonte said successful cooperatives are becoming wealthy because of the continuous growing number of its members yet most of the latter has yet to experience being at the top as entrepreneurs.
"To lend the members with money is already given. But to monitor them to become productive is very necessary," Remonte said.
Remonte is in Cagayan de Oro meeting with local summit hosts cooperatives. The three-day summit is scheduled on October 10 to 12 at the Atrium of LimKetKai Center in Cagayan de Oro. Theme of the summit is "Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better Philippines."
Around 4,000 to 5,000 delegates are expected to attend the large gathering of cooperative leaders from all over the nation.
She said cooperatives should not only release the money borrowed by the members for livelihood, "but also to monitor where the money went."
"With our theme for this year's summit goes, for sure, members would become very productive," she added, even as she urged cooperatives to set aside "big fund" to develop member-entrepreneurs.
Nationwide, more than 20,000 cooperatives are operating with over seven million members, Remonte said.
"I'm sure, the cooperatives would be positive with these suggestions to give chance to the members to own a business and not only as mere members," she replied, when asked as to how optimistic she is that cooperatives would buy what this year's theme connotes.
The summit is done every two years, conducted at selected places in the country, she said.
The national coordinator for this year's assembly of billionaire and millionaire cooperative leaders lauded the local hosts, which are top performing cooperatives in the country.
"The preparations are doing well for the summit. Though, we can't conduct a large gathering equally to that with the Araneta Coliseum, but for sure it is going to be very successful," she said.
It is the second for Cagayan de Oro cooperatives to host such event back in 2002.
