DTI to MSMEs: Develop quality products-A A +A
Tuesday, August 20, 2013
MICRO, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) need to develop better quality products offered at a fair price to capture more local and foreign buyers.
This advice was given by Rhodora M. Leaño, director of the Bureau of Domestic Trade (BDT) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), as the bureau's showroom in Makati City displays the products of PhilExport Cordillera Autonomous Region's (CAR) MSMEs until next month.
Leaño said the showroom aims to provide opportunities for new enterprises to test their products in a highly urbanized market outside the provinces, as well existing businesses that are market testing their new products.
She said it also meant to determine what products are ready to be pushed to bigger markets.
"Regions that have more advanced manufacturing industries actually are reaping bigger sales than those that are still developing...It could be also a question of being able to price the products right," she stressed.
Leaño said MSMEs should produce products that meet quality standards.
"Let's say a buyer gets truly attracted to their products. If they do meet the orders, specifications of products that were manufactured should be those that were originally agreed upon," she said.
Leaño said they hope to develop a set of professional MSMEs which can cater to the domestic market at the same time serve as suppliers for direct exporters.
"The whole idea really is to develop the capability of these MSMEs and bring them to higher levels of operation," she added.
Each quarter, DTI's BDT invites a cluster of industries from regions to exhibit their products in the showroom.
"We offer the use of facilities free of charge. The only thing we asked from the MSMEs is that they should ensure there is a beautiful presentation of their products, the supply remains available and products that are on display meet minimum standards for labeling and safety," Leaño said. (PR)
