Mindanao power situation expected to improve-A A +A

MINDANAO’S power situation is expected to improve following the successful completion of the maintenance works for Unit 2 of the Steag State Power Inc. (SPI), a coal-fired power plant based in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental.
SPI plant manager Dr. Carsten Evers announced that the unit was officially synchronized to the Mindanao grid around 5 p.m. last Friday, September 6, more than a week ahead of schedule.
Unit 2, which has a net capacity of 105 megawatts (MW), went offline last July 29 for maintenance.
Steag’s power plant at the Phividec Industrial Estate in Villanueva has two identical electric power generating units with a combined net generating capacity of 210 MW. It accounts for about 20 percent of Mindanao’s total power supply.
More than a month ago, Steag’s Unit 1 also underwent a scheduled maintenance shutdown beginning July 27.
The maintenance works were carried out as planned and completed on August 13, some 34 hours ahead of schedule.
Evers explained that like any other industries, periodic maintenance works for power plants need to be carried out to ensure the power generator’s efficiency and reliability.
“With the two units now in full operations, Mindanao’s power shortfall is expected to improve,” Evers said.
Since start of its commercial operations in November 15, 2006, SPI sustained a remarkable availability rate of 93 percent, with about 9.8 billion kWh of electricity have been delivered so far to the Mindanao grid.
Steag’s power plant is considered as Mindanao’s most modern. The company utilizes state–of-the-art technologies that enabled it to sustain through the years a highly efficient, reliable and responsible power plant operation.
SPI is a leader in highly advanced coal power generation technology. It was established as a special purpose company to finance, build, operate and maintain Mindanao’s first and so far the only coal-fired power plant in the island.
SPI is majority owned by Steag GmbH, which is one of the largest electricity producers in Germany and an active global player in energy development and services. (PR)
