DOT-10 to implement ‘star point system’-A A +A

TO enhance the performance of the local hospitality industry in terms of services and amenities, the Department of Tourism in the region (DOT-10) will adopt the “star point system” in classification of hotels, apartments and resorts to assure tourists of comfort and safety in the city.
DOT-10 regional director Catalino Chan III said there is a need to keep local and foreign tourists safe. According to him, this will be a big help in boosting the city’s tourism and economy.
A star point system will ensure that hospitality establishments are DOT-accredited. The amendment will assure tourists of the convenience and security during their stay.
According to City Councilor Candy Darimbang, chair of the Committee on
Tourism, deluxe hotels should be classified as 5-star hotels while first-class hotels as 4-star hotels. Standard hotels should be in the 3-star category while economy and budget hotels will be given the 2-star rating.
Providing rooms fit for the need of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) is also advised by the tourism department, as well as sprinklers, exits, elevators that can accommodate wheelchairs.
Establishments, according to Darimbang, should also be ready for the usual medical needs of their clients.
Criteria for the star-point system is divided into several aspects namely the convenience of the arrival and departure venue, safety and class of the public area, bathroom facilities, kinds of food and beverage as well as hygiene and sanitation, other amenities and services provided in the establishment, business practices and customer service.
The move for amendment of city ordinance no. 5239-96 or the Cagayan de Oro City Tourism Establishments Regulatory Ordinance of 1996 is also an opportunity to introduce new laws fit for the current needs and demands of customers especially the tourists.
DOT-10 will be sending auditors to evaluate these establishments in the city to make sure they comply with the guidelines once the renewal of the accreditation is done.
Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association (Cohara) executive secretary Nollie Arguellas said that establishments are currently being informed about the ordinance and the expected adjustments.
The DOT is to conduct trainings to tour guides, taxi and van drivers, and other tourism related staff to assure that tourists are welcomed respectfully and warmly in the city.
