Through the Manresa Days, XUCA aim to present to the public that agriculture is strong and plays a vital role in our food security and economy.

Anchored on the theme “Agriculture at the center,” the Manresa Days logo is designed with colorful rings that end with a leaf at the middle, which according to the Agriculture Student Council, presents the college’s efforts to make agriculture known to the people, both young and old.

The Agriculture Student Council is also inviting the public to register for the “Green Run: A Run for Agriculture,” a 5K Fun Run, which is set to on August 21, 2014.

Those interested to join can register at the respective booths at the XU New Gate, XUCA Dean’s Office, SU Peace Park and Xavier Science Foundation Office in Manresa Campus.

Manresa Days has become a yearly celebration and an event to look forward to by the College of Agriculture students most, especially the food sales and Rodeo sa Ateneo held at the Manresa Farm.

The Rodeo sa Ateneo will be graced by other rodeo outfits from Camiguin, Bukidnon and some parts of Mindanao competing along with rodeo group formed by XU students.

Rodeo sa Ateneo
“I’ve been joining the rodeo since 2011,” said Caesar Varias, a 4th year Agriculture student and rodeo enthusiast.

“Prior to Manresa Days, we have these series of practices. I always keep myself focused you should always make sure of your safety first,” he said.

According to Varias, he was able to execute the task, which is to wrestle and tie the bull in a given time. Several times he was wrestled by the bull instead, too.

“I really fear being attacked especially if the bull has horns. But then, I never thought I had this toughness and power. One should always practice discipline and trust in yourself,” he added.

Bea Cadorna has been joining the rodeo for two years and before the Manresa Days, the rodeo group goes jogging or does any cardio exercise to develop their strength and breathing.

“In the arena, you will have to run after the bull so you need to get used to it. There are also techniques to catch the bull faster as taught to us by our coach,” Cadorna said.

She admits to being frightened that she might get a serious injury. However, the feeling of accomplishing the task is fulfilling.

“After a while, I found out that I can perform even as a woman and that I can run fast,” she furthered.

Ideal rodeo players should be risk takers, ready for anything, and fast.
“Contrary to what others think, rodeo is not only physical, but a mental game. You should focus and be able to think fast so you don’t end up with an injury,” Varias and Cadorna, added.

Founded in 1953 by the late Fr. William Masterson, SJ, the College of Agriculture is the second oldest among the colleges of Agriculture in Mindanao.

Walking through the farm’s roads, agriculture students describe it as seeing the vision of the late Fr. Masterson come to life.
