BIR stepping up collection efforts

Monday, February 12, 2018

THE Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) Revenue Region No. 16 (RR16) is stepping up its tax compliance efforts to hit its target collection of P15 billion this year.

Hermeno Palamine, BIR-RR16 regional director said they are confident that they can surpass the assigned target with their tax campaign and by teaming up with district directors especially on the ground.

Palamine said 2017 was a good year with P13 billion collected surpassing the bureau’s P12.8 target.

Palamine attributed the increased collection to their continuous tax mapping efforts, its employees' effort, and the heightened awareness of the taxpayers because of the wide media reportage.

Palamine said the national collection accounted to P1.779 trillion.

"Our goal this year P15 billion, about 20 percent higher than the goal this year, we cannot tell yet if we can hit this because of course we are apprehensive of the effect of the train law, but we will strive hard," Palamine said.

"We hear that because of the TRAIN law, we expect that collections will decline, and our target increased, but we remain optimistic. Our performance in January is good, but February and the coming months, we will see," he added.

Revenue Memorandum Order No. 8-2018 issued by Internal Revenue Commissioner Caesar R. Dulay on Jan. 23, programmed higher tax takes from value-added tax as well as excise taxes this year after the TRAIN Law cut on VAT exemptions but raising the excise tax rates on oil, cigarettes, sugary drinks and vehicles.

Palamine meanwhile urged the public to file for their income tax as early as now and not wait for the April deadline.

Meanwhile, the BIR launched a different theme and logo this year, with the simple "For being part of our nation's progress. Salamat Sa'yo" (Thank You), and a "ripple effect" on the background as its logo.

Palamine unveiled its new theme and logo on Monday during their flag-raising, saying the logo and theme is a way of thanking the taxpayers and acknowledge their contribution instead of asking them to pay outright.

Palamine said the ripple symbolizes the effect of every taxpayers payment, to nation-building and towards being a progressive country.

"We also aacknowledge the men and women of BIR for their competence and professionalism, salamat sa inyong lahat (thank you to all of you)," Palamine added.
