Cagayan de Oro population increases

CAGAYAN de Oro City is reportedly growing at an average of 2.54 percent, results from the 2007 Census of Population conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO) showed.

The survey showed that as of August 1, 2007, population in the city totaled 553,966, which represents an increase of 92,089 persons over the total population of 461,877 persons in 2000.

The 2007 figure translated to an annual population growth rate of 2.54 percent for the period 2000 to 2007.

With the increase in population, the total number of households also rose by 22,699 — from 93,525 in 2000 to 116,224 in 2007. This resulted in an average household size of 4.7 persons, a slight decrease from the 2000 average household size of 4.9 persons.

Among the barangays in the city, Carmen is the most populated comprising 9.5 percent of the total population followed by Barangays Lapasan with 7.3 percent, Kauswagan with 5.9 percent, Balulang with 5.7 percent and Bugo with five percent. The rest of the barangays had a share of less than five percent each to the total population.

Of the city’s total population, the survey showed that there were more males (273,483) than females (276,917), which resulted in a sex ratio of 99 males for every 100 females. In 2000, the sex ratio was 98 males for every 100 females.

The survey also showed that the city recorded a median age of 22 years. This means that half of the household population was below 22 years old. In 2000, the median age was 21 years.

Persons aged 15 to 19 years comprised the largest age group in the city with 11.6 percent, probably due to in-migration to Cagayan de Oro City of students or workers.

The 2007 Census of Population was undertaken to provide current data on population counts, which would serve as the basis for Internal Revenue Allotment and creation of new local government units (LGUs) and/or conversion of some of the existing LGUs to higher level, pursuant to the provisions of the 1991 Local Government Code.

Eleven censuses of population have already been undertaken since the turn of the 20th Century — 1903, 1918, 1939, 1948, 1960, 1970, 1975, 1980, 1990, 1995 and 2000.
