Corpus Christi, City Central share honors

CITY Central School's gymnast pair of Kevin Tagapulot and Lia Delle Flores played a big part in averting what could have been another sweeping victory by Corpus Christi School.

Tagapulot and Flores each finished with triple golds in artistic gymnastics. A solid effort that paved the way for Central Central's complete domination in elementary gymnastics (boys and girls)that was worth a combined 30 points.

With scrabble and chess also largely contributing 15 and 10 points apiece, City Central went on to upset Corpus Christi, 122-112 for the overall crown in elementary level of the 14th Milo Little Olympics Mindanao concluded here on Sunday at the Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center.

Corpus Christi won both the elementary and secondary titles last year, a feat it has accomplished for the second time in over a decade in the history of the Mindanao-wide multifarious meet.

"The support and generosity of the City Central School management has finally paid off. It provided a decent venue (being the CCS covered court) for our year-round training program," said gymnastics coach Esteria Waga who commended Tagapulot and Flores for being what she termed as a "fabulous tandem".

Hyacinth Serrano also won a gold in rhythmic gymnastics as the City Central's word wizards reigned supreme and its woodpushers took the runner-up honors in chess competition.

Corpus Christi could not be denied, however, in the upper level as the Junior Knights struck hard in almost all fronts of the battle, particularly in taekwondo, table tennis, badminton and gymnastics to secure the secondary's overall championship five years in a row.

Corpus Christi nosed out closest pursuer Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS), 171.00 to 118.5 in total points.

"Athletes' determination, commitment and pride as Corpus Christians are what made Corpus Christi stay on top. Of course, our school director Dr. Alfonso del Fierro Jr. is very supportive in our recruitment program for promising athletes in the locality, which is excellent," shared Corpus Christi sports coordinator Eric Miguel.

Corpus Christi had RP Team member Ian Nietes Lariba to give its high school girls a monumental edge in table tennis. While its secondary boys counts on the heavy cast of Christian Philip Palmero, Carlo Angelo Wollanes and the equally-talented Benoya brothers in Sergio Louie, Serknight and Serjun.

The foursome of Maria Mantilla (fin novice), Iona Salvacion (fin advance), Lovely Avanceña (fly advance) and Isabella Falcon (light advance) provided the gold haul in taekwondo's secondary girls rivalry.

This, as Palaro veteran Josafat Licayan emerged as the only male jin to secure a gold for the Knights in secondary boys division.

Gymnast Joana Rose Orejola had a double-gold production for Corpus Christi in secondary girls' artistic gymnastics.
