The best father

BEING the youngest girl in the family, I am often showered with much love by my father, which made others say that I am a "papa's girl."

Yes, I am a papa's girl. Every time my mother scolds me, I would seek comfort from my father. Whenever I needed money and my mother wouldn't give, I always had papa to run to. Never mind if the amount is so small, I would greatly appreciate it.

I spent 16 years of my life with my family in my hometown in Maramag, Bukidnon. And in those years, I can barely count the times my father scolded me. What I can aptly remember are years full of love and care. There's no favoritism in our family. It's just that, I feel I am very special in his eyes.

When I got married at age 20 right after graduating from college, I can see the pain in my father's eyes. I haven't seen him cry but according to my mother, he cried when she told him I would be getting married. That time, guilt has gotten all over me. I cried, too, for giving him pain. But I know sooner or later, he would accept it.

Soon enough, he had recovered and went on with his life the same way that I tried to start a life of my own with my new family.

After our wedding, my husband brought me to Cagayan de Oro where we started our own family. The distance has somehow clouded my relationship with my father since we seldom talk. Whenever he is on vacation with us, he would always rush home, citing that nobody is going to take care of his farm, his carabaos and roosters.

But even then, my father is so special to me. He is one good father that every child wants to have. To me, he is the best father in the world. I never heard him having an affair with any other girl except my mother.

In 2013, my father and mother would be celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary. The long years that they have spent together makes me think if my marriage would also last that long. Hopefully...
