SM CITY Cagayan de Oro held a reflective, nostalgic, artistic and fun-filled 114thIndependence Day celebration on Tuesday.
At exactly 9:45 a.m., 43 flags were simultaneously raised in 43 SM Malls in the country, paving way for patriotism and Filipino pride.
While waiting for the clock to ticks at 9:45 a.m., Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) Regional Director Johnson Cañete congratulated the SM employees who made an effort in making the Independence Day a momentous event.
Over the years, SM City always observes this celebration in its own creative ways, making an exciting twist to make shoppers fully comprehend on the true meaning of the event.
After the flag was raised, guests were invited to go to the event center to witness the unveiling of the flag made of pastel courtesy of Vjandep.
The 6x12 pastel flag is made of 2,052 pieces or 171 dozens of pastel, which is composed of 32 kilos of flour, 510 pieces of egg, 43 kilos of milk and two kilos of margarine. The pastel is graciously offered by Vjandep owner Virgilio Jose and his lovely wife Elenor for the past three consecutive years.
The “flag pastel” was then shared in the afternoon by shoppers who watched and enjoyed the show.
Seeing the activity area was like taking you to memory lane. It’s like watching national heroes come to life with Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio talking in front during the balagtasan program.
Performing their piece in a convincing tone as to who will be rightly called the national hero, either Rizal or Bonifacio, made the shoppers also ponder.
Human-like sculptures made by a local artist were also displayed.
Aside from the flag made of pastel, six painting collections from the Xavier University museum made by Nonoy Estarte were also displayed for shoppers and guests to appreciate.
Estarte said the paintings he made consist of local heroes in this city.
“The people should appreciate what our local heroes done to fight for freedom,” he said.
SM also showed different ethnic dances for shoppers to appreciate.
It was indeed a great day to celebrate Independence Day at the SM Mall.
Ivy Guantero, SM public relations officer, said this is their own way of paying tribute to the flag as she looks forward to another year of celebration.
