Church groups: Be guardians to the environment-A A +A
Saturday, January 4, 2014
AFTER the devastating calamities in 2013, various church groups in Cagayan de Oro City urged the public to become more conscious of its responsibility as guardians of the environment.
“As guardians we have to take care of our perishable mother nature,” said Fr. Nathan Lerio of the Archdiocesan Social Action Center here.
Lerio added that the people’s endeavor should be more united and concerted against the miseries brought about by these man-made and natural disasters.
“We should live in communion and solidarity as one people,” he added.
Lerio said the people should also be courageous and selfless for the common good to attain genuine peace and prosperity.
Save Iponan River officer, Fr. Ludito Lumamba of Iglesia Filipina Independiente (IFI), said the people should not slack in safeguarding the environment.
“We should take care of our environment because sooner or later it will take its toll on us again,” Lumamba added.
Aside from being united, Lumamba added the Filipinos should be participative in social actions against the destruction of our environment because they are the ones who will be affected by its degradation.
Mining and logging
Specifically, he pointed out that the people should unite and go against mining operations and logging activities.
Lumamba added that mining operations and logging activities that brought destruction to our forests and mountains caused climate change and have intensified the effect of natural calamities.
Meanwhile, the regional coordinator of Kalumbay lumad organization, Jomorito Goaynon, urged the public not just to unite but to go against the culprits of environmental destruction.
“Unity is not enough. The people should unite and have the same mindset in taking care of the environment,” he said adding that it would be dangerous if the mind of the people will only be united on exploiting further the environment.
Goaynon added the extraction of minerals through mining and logging should be well planned to avoid bringing about imminent danger to the environment and the lives of the Filipino people.
To elaborate further, he said the environment should be used mainly to address the needs of the society and not for the ceaseless accumulation of profits by a few.
“The present system promotes the ceaseless exploitation of our environment because they have been using to achieve super profits,” he said adding that capitalists like the foreign mining firms and logging investors have bottomless appetite toward profit.
He added that there is a seemingly anarchistic use of environment because of profit and greed.
Goaynon said since it is a New Year, people should understand deeply the connection between the destruction of our environment and the present system of the Philippine society.
“The people should understand deeper than what they already understood. The problem with our environment is not separated from the larger problem the Philippine society is besieged,” said Goaynon.
He added that to uproot the central cause of environmental degradation, the minds of the people should be in union to something that will translate into concrete actions.
Goaynon said the Filipino people should go against the present system that has the doctrine of “super profit.”
He added that it is also important to achieve true patrimony and independence in order to free the environment from colonial control that is greedy and profit oriented.
