BOYS Town is very close to my heart after working in Don Bosco Boys Home in Cebu for many years during my younger days.
Boys Home is run by Catholic religious order of the Salesians of Don Bosco. They have a network of charities all over world that help provide the facilities, food and other basic needs for the children.
The place, which used to be in Banilad, Cebu City, has been moved to Lilo-an, Cebu. There, they have nice facilities with dorms, workshops, classrooms, a chapel and everything the children would need to live decently.
For the second year in a row now, SunStar Cagayan de Oro Inc. shared Christmas with the poor and abandoned boys in Lumbia village.
Ironically, the state of the place in Lumbia is miles away compared to Don Bosco Boys Home in Cebu.
The state of place they call home is heart breaking. There were leaking roofs, leaking toilets, and inadequate beds - a place that is not good enough for children to live.
The City Social Welfare and Development of Cagayan de Oro manage the place but it seems they have already forgotten that little children live there.
The Cagayan de Oro council just passed a P4.5 billion budget for 2017. We hope they have included Boys Town in that budget.
The boys just need the basic things, like food, clothes, soaps, and even toothbrushes. Their place needs to be repaired not later but now. They also need regular visits from doctors, dentists and other medical professionals.
If indeed the Cagayan de Oro City Government has forgotten the children, why can’t the private sector do its part?
The children need our help. SunStar Cagayan de Oro Inc. has done its part. Let’s do something to help Boys Town.
