Friday, December 13, 2013
FOR this year’s fiesta celebration of Villanueva town in honor of its patron saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe, the local government incorporated a new activity on its list – Mister Villanueva.
On December 11, 2013, the first ever male pageant was launched at
Villanueva municipal gym. Eleven male participants from their respective Barangays: Poblacion 1, Katipunan, Dayawan, Poblacion 2, Balacanas, Tambobong, Poblacion 3, Looc, San Martin, Kimaya and Imelda.
Vice mayor Edwin Dagasuan thanked the support of the kagawads (councilors) from the different barangays as he welcomed everyone in the event.
Miss Kagay-an 2012 Greanne Trisha Mendoza hosted the pageant; and as she called in the 11 contestants, the crowd cheered wildly on their bets.
The contestants were judged based on the criteria: 50 percent for personality and 50 percent for talent.
The talent competition was held on December 7 at the same venue.
The contestants were evaluated by Cagayan de Oro’s icons, Carlston Maglangit, Mary Koreen Witting, Miss Kagay-an Tourism 2012 Jamie Joy Bantigue, Paul James Pagalan and Gil Macaibay III.
The contest proper
The first round showcased the different festival attires of Northern Mindanao. The 11 contestants introduced their attires with flair and pride. The gym was filled with more people as the event got hotter and hotter than ever. Some of them had to sit on the floor just to see the pageant.
For the semi-formal round, most of the contestants wore the daylight semi-formal code grasp or known as “stroller” in the fashion industry.
With black tail-less coat complemented with striped or checkered pants matched with oxford or deck shoes worn by the them, most of the girls from the crowd were enthralled.
Testing their intelligence and what they perhaps value in life is one of the features of Mister Villanueva. Thus, the question and answer portion was cut in right after the semi-formal round. Questions thrown were mostly situational which the contestants never failed to answer with certainty.
In the middle of the event and prior to the question and answer portion, Lawyer Julio Uy, Villanueva’s mayor, spoke to the crowd. He assured his constituents that he will cater their needs. Earlier, he told this writer that education is a priority program of his administration. "The youth must be educated," he added.
Minor awards were given afterwards. Mr. Dansoy Station was awarded to Kent Dave Rejas; Mr. Gawa Mi Grill, Kevin Cabunoc; Mr. Ilonggo’s Best, Mark Jason Mancawa; Mr. 4E Gym and Best in Talent, Lordito Adora; Mr. Congeniality, Noel Zayas; Mr.Personality, Anecito Cabactulan Jr.; and Best in Regional Festival Attire, Ritchie Lucnagan.
To give ample time for the contestants to change for their swimwear, ‘Sabyo’ entertained the audience with a satire performance where he got to sing a tenor and soprano.
The crowd shrieked as the 11 contestants walked across the stage wearing their black, square cut trunks that perfectly showed their butch bodies and posed from one stage wing to another.

For the final round—the formal wear—the contestants donned a slim cut, long-sleeved and black-dominated wear paired with black slacks and boots.
The last four awards were given right after they sauntered the stage. UYC Icon was bestowed to Mark Jayson Mancawan; Mr. World of Fun to Anecito Cabactulan Jr.; Best in Swimwear to Lordito Adora; and Best in Formal Wear to Bryan Uyapon.
From 11 contestants, only five made it to the last round of question and answer.
With fingers crossed, Jese Romil Salvan, Anecito Cabactulan Jr., Lordito Adora, Bryan Uyapon and Ritchie Lucnagan landed in the top five.
Fashion designer icon Gil Macaibay III designed and sponsored the swim and formal wear attire.
In the final question and answer portion, the contestants awareness on social issues were measured.
