RAIN, rain, go away, come again another day!

I bet this is what everybody has been thinking or saying the last few days or so because of the daily rain and cold wind that have been affecting our place.

The water level in the rivers has gone up high and everyone is vigilant of possible dangers.

Many are probably still under the traumatic spell of what happened during the typhoon Sendong.

A lot of populated areas are submerged in water, some a few inches high, some to more than a few feet of muddy, dirty waters that can cause a lot of skin diseases and more.

With the strong wind, houses, shanties and other structures are destroyed or swept away by the high rising currents or strong wind. Trees are uprooted, agricultural products damaged.

But on the other hand, with this chilly and damp weather, it feels good to stay at home, bundle up and spend time in bed.

A time to enjoy the comfort of your warm bed and with your family.
And what else? Food of course!

That warms the heart and soul.

Something that you enjoy, in the company of your family, love ones or just being alone.

Times like these, comfort foods are the “in” thing.
Let’s see, what do we have?

Maybe we could start with a warm cup of coffee, tea or chocolate early in the morning.

Pair this with ‘enzaymada,’ ‘suman,’ ‘shakoy,’ ‘empanada,’ ‘pan de sal,’ ‘binangkal,’ or any native ‘kakanin’ for ‘pamainit’ early in the morning.
Looking back, I was introduced to this ‘painit’ when I visited a friend in Medina in the early 80’s.

I was awakened at about 6:30am and naturally, I thought it was breakfast we were having that morning.

Cold and hungry, I devoured several pan de sal to start the day with a cup of ‘sikwate.’

After which, we continued our chatting session and before I knew it, it was time to have our ‘pamahaw’! And that was about 9:30 or so.
I was confused because I thought what I had earlier was already ‘pamahaw.’

But at the same time, thrilled because I was getting hungry again!
And upon seeing the fried rice with sunny side eggs, ‘bulad,’ hotdog and ‘adobo’ on the table, it was a welcome sight!

I dare not ask my friend since I know we will be having another meal again in an hour or so.

Going back to our comfort foods on a cold weather, we definitely have so much to choose from: ‘champorado,’ ‘lugao’ or ‘pospas,’ ‘mami’ (in all variants) and ‘lomi’ to name a few, which we can enjoy anytime of the day and in-betweens.

But then again, how about eating “real” foods instead?

Sinangag with tocino, tapa, corned beef, ‘chorizo,’ ‘longganisa,’ or fried bangus for lunch or dinner? With matching ‘sawsawan’ of ‘toyo’ with kalamansi and ‘sili’!

‘Bulalo,’ pancit, barbecue with ‘atsara,’ grilled fish or squid, ‘sinigang’ and ‘tinola’ with lots of veggies, humba, guisadong bagoong or guinamos with steamed rice would be perfect!

Being of Chinese descent, I am sure a lot of us would love steaming hot Chinese foods during this time: dimsum delights like ‘siomai,’ ‘siopao,’ dumplings, noodles (stir fried or soup), porkchop soup, ‘makimi,’ spring rolls, congee and cruellers with a cup of green tea.

Afternoon delights can include, steamed bananas, or ‘kamote,’ fried bananas and sweet potatoes coated with sticky, gooey crunchy caramel, sweet corn, ‘tabirak’ or ‘guinataan,’ ‘kulo with latik’ then gobbled with corn coffee!

What about burgers, chicken sandwich, pizza, pasta and some chips while watching a great movie with the family instead of going out and getting soaked in the rain?

Munching on roasted or fried peanuts and maybe cashew would definitely be awesome while gulping some beverages, so with other crunchy ‘chichirias,’ which we really do have an assortment to choose from.

I guess I don’t mind having ice-cold ‘halo-halo’ or ‘maiz con hielo’ in this kind of weather!

Fruit shakes like mango, avocado, guyabano would do well, too! How about you?

Dinner can be a repeat of what we had earlier for lunch, but again, I don’t mind having ‘spam’ and eggs for dinner.

‘Inun-unan,’ ‘pritong isda’ with ‘sari-sari’ vegetables would go well with a cup of instant noodles will be satisfying to a lot of us.
And I bet, many of us like it hot and spicy!

Late night snacks can be instant pancit canton, breads, or some biscuits or crackers.

Or just a cup of milk will do the job.

With all these foods to choose from, enjoy life and keep warm and dry.
Don’t get sick.

Also, it is the time to take out those jackets, sweaters, coats and thick clothing and blankets.

Wear them since it is said that the cold spell will be with us till February!
