Yoga it is!

SO, what are you doin’ this summer?

Are you one of those who are on staycation and just chillin’ at home with the movies you have always wanted to watch for the longest time? Or probably, you are just taking this opportunity to relax and chill with nature around you, while others are touring the hidden wonders of Mindanao (or even the archipelago)? Or the swotty who are taking advanced summer classes?

Or did you know that there is another way to unwind, get in touch with your inner selves, find your balance, and get fit all the at the same time?

The answer – yoga it is!

Will Tan meets yoga

Will Tan, one of Manila’s best yoga instructors together with Julie Ang, One Yoga Wellness Studio’s owner, shares how yoga can be fun, relaxing, and physically beneficial.

Before Will practiced yoga, he went through postponing it for the nth time, then 2008 came and for the first time Will attended a yoga studio’s first anniversary party where his talk to yoga teachers convinced him to start it the next day. “One of the yoga teachers asked: What’s the difference between next month and tomorrow? Why not practice now? Why do you have to keep on postponing it?”

He started by doing the hot yoga the following day. At first, his involvement in yoga was on and off since practicing it in the middle of a hot summer in Manila seemed absurd.

Things started to change when he found out there are other forms of yoga. In 2010, he fell in love with Vinyasa, the breath synchronized yoga. He could do it anytime, anywhere – a fit that he just needed considering his busy work schedule. And since it is easier, his yoga became regular and he did it three to four times a week.

In less than a year, he already wanted to become a yoga teacher. Despite the rarity of studios in Manila which offer yoga teacher training, he found his way to one studio. In November 2011, he finally became one. It's been about six years since Will started the practice, and he has definitely learned more than just mastering the different yoga poses; he has somehow changed.

Will told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that yoga is not just something that you choose but is rather complementary in whatever you do. “Whether you run, or you swim, or go to the gym, yoga is very helpful because it stretches your body.”

Will explains that a lot of people practice yoga for different reasons. “But for whatever reason it is, they just do it. Eventually, you’ll find something that will make you keep on coming back, to find your own practice,” he says.

In his case, he has found something in yoga that made him become someone better. His attitude toward many things and circumstances was quite aggressive before, but after years of yoga practice, he is now calmer and more patient.

The One Yoga experience

Will Tan shares his expertise in Vinyasa with some of the One Yoga students on April 25 until April 27. 2014.

And I am lucky enough to get the chance to practice yoga with them, too—for the first time—under the direction of Will Tan.

For someone like me who tried it for the very first time, I felt uncomfortable. But after a series of breathing properly, stretching, balancing, and going through different poses, I got the hang of it.

Somewhere in the middle of the practice, I got tired. What’s surprising, though, is that I didn’t quite mind. And neither did the others. There’s just something about it that made me kept going.

Although there were worldly noises all around, I’ve learned that focusing on my breathing, and balancing can help in keeping those noises out. And even if the practice kind of pushed me to challenge my flexibility, and my ability to balance as well, the experience was very promising.

It’s not as brutal as I thought it was. In fact, my first yoga practice makes me want to come back for more!

One Yoga progress

Since the last time Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro spoke to Julie Ang, a lot of developments took place in One Yoga Wellness Studio located at Velez street corner San Agustin.

Supervising the studio’s renovation has overwhelmed Julie because of the load of work. The renovation started in mid-January this year. Although classes had already begun this April, the reconstruction continues for a better yoga experience for the students.

"One Yoga, same as the people, it will be a work in progress," Julie says.

Aside from the obvious changes in appearance, a lot of other improvement also took place at One Yoga. More students have enrolled for yoga classes. But that’s not the only class available.

After closing the Body Basics gym that ran a few decades, she took in some classes offered before in order to harmonize and bring balance to One Yoga.

She is taking the risk to put up the only yoga place in Cagayan de Oro, so she thought it was just right to bring in some other classes aside from yoga to make the place more vibrant.

One Yoga can bring a whole new experience to those who want to try and immerse in something quite new for Kagay-anons.

And it has just begun its goal of giving a different experience for those interested in yoga. After all, according to both Will and Julie, the end goal in yoga is the journey itself. (Myles Cantal Albasin UP-Cebu Mass Comm Intern)
