MARAWI as a city became so fortunate when it became an Islamic City in 1980.
However, almost two decades before its proclamation, the city started to bloom when the Mindanao State University (MSU) was established in 1961 on the so-called melting pot of the South.
The University as envisioned was a brain child of the late Senator Domocao Alonto to respond to the malady faced by the Mindanaoans in those years.
It is conceptualized to be a social laboratory for national integration.
Aesthetically, this university, being the largest campus, has added to the beauty of Marawi City because of its ambiance that was designed to attract individuals from all over the country.
It has its wide golf course that is overlooking the City and the Lake Lanao.
From a distance, it makes the hills and valleys of Lanao look like a sleeping beauty from a far-away fairy tale land.
Being an academic institution, the enriched charter of RA 1387 has made MSU an arm to become the lead institution in Mindanao to educate the youth of the Mindanao, Sulu and Palawan (Minsupala) region.
It has various degree offerings that address the learning needs of every student from the region.
From the artistic to the most skill-based courses offered by the colleges of Agriculture, Business Administration and Accountancy, Education, Engineering, Fisheries, Forestry and Environmental Sciences, Hotel and Restaurant Management, Health Sciences, Information Technology, Law School, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Medicine, Public Affairs and Social Sciences and Humanities, any student can choose the degree of his/her dreams.
MSU has another objective to sustain and maintain businesses and industries in the region by producing graduates that suit manpower requirement needs.
Its Colleges like the College of Engineering has produced engineers who manned and worked at the famous National Power Corporation and the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines.
Not only does MSU support in the manpower but has hosted other national private and public offices and establishments like banks to operate within the campus.
The university’s vast land has given business-minded Meranaws the chance to situate their commercial establishments within the campus.
In fact, if one visits Marawi, MSU is the best place to find good food and restaurants.
As a campus that hosts students from different parts of the country, the University is successful in its objective to integrate the Muslims and other cultural minorities into the mainstream of national life.
It is in this campus where you see Non-Muslims and Muslims co-exist harmoniously.
In the campus, there is a church beside a mosque and a Protestants’ house next to a religious Muslim home.
They respected the existence of each other without the inhibition to perform one’s faith.
To us Meranaws, having MSU is a blessing.
With its almost 17,000 multi-ethnic students and other thousands of residents within the campus, the campus can be treated as a city within a city.
Indeed, MSU has become an instrument for multicultural integration that has capacitated both Muslims and non-Muslim minority groups in Mindanao to forward peace-building in Mindanao.
The university is proud to have both beauty and academic excellence.
It is a must see for every Mindanaoan to witness the value and beauty inside this campus.
In few years’ time, the present MSU will eventually become the most modern university in the region.
Its on-going world-class structural projects will create a new ambiance for every Filipino, Mindanaoan and even MSUan.
Find a chance to see this unique community of a city within a city.
