SMART’S app aids in Operation Smile’s mega mission-A A +A

OPERATION Smile Philippines (OSP) has healed the smiles of over 750 children by way of free reconstructive surgery during a nationwide mission dubbed as the “Gift of Smiles.” This year, the worldwide charity organization is providing free surgeries among children with cleft deformities that has undergone a patient screening process using a mobile application that was developed by Smart Communications, Inc. (Smart) and Ateneo Java Wireless Competency Center (AJWCC).
SMART and AJWCC codeveloped the mobile application for Operation Smile in 2011 to help conduct the nationwide screening of patients more efficiently.
“We are happy to be able to help Operation Smile prepare and form strategies before conducting medical missions through the reports generated from the OpSmile mobile app,” said Smart Public Affairs Group Head Ramon Isberto. “Patients are also able to prepare early for surgery since Operation Smile doctors can send immediate feedback to the health workers on ground via the OpSmile website.”
With the app, volunteers can take photos of patients using a mobile phone camera, key in their profile information, and send the data to an online database via Internet that OSP doctors can access real time.
The week-long mega mission, which mobilized around 300 volunteers from 18 countries, was simultaneously held in Angeles City, Pampanga; Dasmarinas, Cavite; Borongan, Eastern Samar; Cebu City; Bacolod City; and Davao City.
Development of mobile apps for health is part of Smart’s mHealth program, which hopes to transform healthcare delivery in the country through the use of mobile technologies. As early as 2008, the leading telco has been developing technology solutions for health, in partnership with the government and industry experts.
