COMPETITION in the food industry of Cagayan de Oro has been tight with several food establishments opening and eventually picking up.

An entrepreneur would think opening and offering an unfamiliar menu would be risky.

However, 25-year-old Aldrian Villegas preferred to take his chances and opened up his own pizza chain last June 28, 2014.

Villegas, who loves to travel, makes it a point to observe and study the taste, presentation as well as the interior and service of the restaurants and food chains he visits in Manila or in other countries.

“I always loved food. And I am very particular of the taste. I like something tasty and when something isn’t good for me, it really puts me off. I wanted to give that great experience to the Kagay–anons. I wanted to create a new breed of pizza lovers with a specific taste. And I wanted to introduce to them the kind I love, beer-battered pizza,” Villegas said.

The name of his pizzeria is derived from a mafia movie entitled Good Fellas. Villegas likes mafia-themed movies and decided to incorporate the name to his pizza chain.

“Good Fellas also mean happy times with friends and families. I’d like to create that atmosphere here,” he added.

To make beer-battered pizza, the chilled pizza dough is fried and then dipped in beer as is the practice in Australia, Russia, Europe and in the US is fried and then dipped in beer.

In cooking the GF Pizza way, beer is a main component of the dough and it is baked with fresh toppings and ingredients.

Currently serving pizza good for 1 to 2 persons in Big Joe, Rizzo, Danny, Joe Piney, Wild Bill, Sammy, Mickey White, and Vinny flavours, Wild Bill covered with jalapeño and chorizo is GF Pizza’s most unique on the menu.

“Personally, my favorites are Big Joe, our all-meat pizza and Mickey White, our four cheese pizza. Big Joe because, well, I'm a meat lover and the four-cheese pizza is really good with cheeses like cheddar, parmesan and gargonzola,” Villegas said.

Good Fellas Pizza is located at the 2nd floor of Sweet Leaf Bubble Tea Cafe at Pabayo-Chaves Streets.

Sweet Leaf

Villegas’s first food venture in Cagayan de Oro is the famous Sweet Leaf Bubble Tea Cafe.

Villegas, with his business partner Angelina Paras, runs the three branches of Sweet Leaf.

Prior to opening Sweet Leaf, Villegas is a part of an event organizing and marketing team in Manila for a few months, then came back to Cagayan de Or to open a business.

“Before, milk tea was not popular in the city, so we decided to introduce it here,” Villegas said.

With Sweet Leaf’s popularity among students and young adults, Villegas hopes to expand Good Fellas and Sweet Leaf more to make it a favorite not only of Kagay–anons but also by tourists who frequent the city.
