AFTER a year of absence, the city’s street dancing competition, held during the fiesta week, is now back with its newest theme "Cagayan Carnival."

Barangay Carmen was awarded the first Cagayan Carnival champion out of the six contenders on Sunday, August 24, and brought home P100,000.

Dancing to the beat of lively and “bombastic” music, as what choreographer Junamon Montero described it, the team gave its all-out performance.

“Among gihaum sa theme karon nga carnival ug syempre anaa nasad ang Asean so amo pung gi-integrate kana sa steps ug sa whole performance (We jibed our performance with this year’s theme. Our dance steps were also flavored with some dance steps from the Asean),” Montero said.

Their performers wore cream and leopard-printed leotards with multi-colored and sequined headdresses, arm and leg ruffles in vibrant pink, blue, green and yellow.

“Our theme is ‘Mi Amigo’ a latin word that means ‘My Friend.’ The performance consisted of loud chanting and dancing with shiny shimmery colorful costumes,” Montero added.

The second place went to the Liceo de Cagayan University Dragon Boat Team and Lapasan National High School Special Program for the Arts awarded bagged the third place.

LDCU Dragon Boat Team’s performance was also to be applauded for.

Men and women wore gray and green Chinese vests, Japanese kimonos, Indian saris and Brazilian skirts, a creative mix of traditional costumes of Asia.

Their theme is “Bridging Asia and the rest of the world,” the performance is a tribute to lasting friendship and merriment.

Lapasan NHS Special Program for the Arts was no less creative and fun, with kids wearing shirts in bright yellow and white bottoms and shoes with a lively performance. Their carnival was complete with clowns walking on stilts and colored flaglets.

The third place, with P4,000 in cash, was awarded to the Dancesport Council of Cagayan de Oro’s representative.

The Carnival street dancing competition was held in celebration of friendship spanning the globe, a fitting celebration as Cagayan de Oro emerges as a global intermediate city.
