March: Fire Prevention Month

Saturday, March 11, 2017

AS SUMMER is fast approaching, our environment is starting to get warmer. March is considered the entry month of summer season. Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Proclamation 115-A assigning March as Fire Prevention Month due to high fire incident recorded cases within the month.

March is one of the hottest months in the country and it’s the start of the hot dry season that usually runs from March to May. Before we prepare ourselves from summer outings and beach hopping, let us prepare some precautions to avoid fire in our properties. As the popular Filipino saying always reminds us “di baling manakawan, huwag lang masunogan”
Avoid or possibly don’t keep candles in your houses if it’s not necessarily needed. Majority of the causes of fire start at children playing candles. Candles are mostly used when black out arises. Instead of using candles as alternative if we have no current we can use high quality Led flashlights that you can charge. As I visited the mall there is one stop shop that sells good quality flashlight prices ranging from P40 to P100 each rather than buying candles.

Annually or every 6 months, let an electrician check the electrical wiring in your hous. At least check if all the wirings are in good condition. Some of the fire incident causes are through faulty wiring or the wires are bitten by a rat that can cause short circuit.

If possible, install smoke alarm in our premises and change the batteries every six months, some premises already have it but don’t know that it has batteries. Smoke alarm detects smoke presence in an area that may cause the fire. Invest for fire extinguishers as it’s the popular and easy equipment to put down starting big fire. These items are a bit costly but it can avoid starting fire that may result to bigger problem.
Our car wash hose is also a good tool when fire starts, I suggest you place it around a visible area for emergency uses and it can easily be accessed anytime.

In every premises including our houses, be conscious in future incidents, plan, meeting and rehearse for an alternative fire exit and things to do when fire arises, to avoid getting panic when it’s already happening. Example if fire happens don’t go to the comfort to escape, chances are very minimal to get out in that kind of area. Crawl down if fire happens to avoid suffocation, especially if the presence of the smoke is already severe.

Your life is more precious than your Iphone, jewels and other valuable things. Fire spreading is sometimes as fast as a blink of an eye. It’s recommended to forget your possession during fire, as things can be replaced by another but life can’t be replace. Most of death cases through fire are caused by getting back in the burning properties.

As an Insurance advisor, let your property be covered with an insurance. At least you will be compensated or recovered when unexpected losses happen. The minimal cost of premium is nothing, when it gives security and peace of mind.
