Kung Hei Fat Choi!

WITH the eve of Chinese New Year upon us, getting ready for another year of prosperity and good luck is a definite must.

Though some families and individuals prepare for the big day weeks ahead of time, here are a few last minute tips on how to make sure one enters the Chinese New Year with good luck, fortune, prosperity and everything positive on his side.

Clean, clean, clean!

Welcoming the Chinese New Year with a clean home has always been a tradition and a must. Why do they do it? To get rid of all the bad luck accumulated in the previous year, of course! On a side note, sweeping one’s home on the first day of the new year is a big no-no, as doing so will sweep away all the new luck. Don’t limit cleaning to the home though, as cleaning one’s office space is also a good idea.

Settling the unsettled

Along with cleaning, one must also settle unfinished business before the New Year. Paying off the debts, doing the chores, resolving all quarrels with families and friends, finishing your homework are all true to life examples of settling unfinished business. This paves a way for one to start the New Year fresh, opening avenues for opportunities to come in and to ultimately feel lighter and more accomplished in time for the big day.

Bring out the food! Hide the knives!

An array of Chinese dishes and whatnot is a must, and an abundance of food signifies that the New Year will be a year of prosperity!

Taking note of that, preparing the feast ahead of time is absolutely advisable, as bringing out knives on the first day of the New Year is frowned upon. Why? Superstition has it that brandishing a knife on the special day “cuts off” the good luck that will be coming in for the year.

Greens in the home

Sprucing up a home can be achieved by accentuating it with house plants and the same goes for the New Year. If luck is high on the list of things one wishes for, then going out and getting some decorative, yet lucky plants is the thing to do. What are considered lucky plants? We’ve got the orange tree, mandarin tree, lucky bamboos, and if one can really get one, branches of cherry blossoms are all sought after by many.

Family is the word

Children are in luck this New Year. On New Year’s Day, many parents are advised not to reprimand their children. As a day of auspicious celebration, merry-making and happiness, it is a day that is meant to be enjoyed by everyone. Along with that, enjoying a New Year’s Eve dinner with the family symbolizes closeness and the intimacy one shares with them, heralding in the New Year with an abundance of love.
