CAGAYAN DE ORO -- Four people were killed while 18 others were wounded when a passenger bus plunged into a creek in Barangay Pook, Talisayan, Misamis Oriental on Tuesday evening.
Police identified Dwight Catig, 30, the bus driver, as among those who died in the accident, which happened around 6:30 p.m. He died at the Northern Mindanao Medical Center (NMMC) in this city while undergoing treatment.
Two male passengers were declared dead on arrival at a hospital in Talisayan by Municipal Health Officer Dr. Gay Aranas, while at least 11 passengers were brought to NMMC.
Those who were brought to NMMC were 57-year-old Jeremiah Rayon, Jerot Danao, Lea Ansibay, Miguel Berjano, Ponzita Guzmana, Edgar and Francesca Angcon, Roy and Angela Tapic, James and Liceana Ybañez.
Eight other passengers, whose names are not yet available as of this posting Wednesday, were reportedly brought to a hospital in nearby Gingoog City. One of them reportedly died.
PO2 Pedrito Cocamas of the Misamis Oriental-Provincial Police Office (PPO-MO) said the Bachelor Express bus owned by Rural Transit was headed for Butuan City from Cagayan de Oro when the accident happened.
Cocamas said police and civilian volunteers helped each other, as they pulled the dead and injured passengers out of the bus.
The victims were then transported to different hospitals in Gingoog City, Talisayan and in Cagayan de Oro.
Initial investigation showed that the bus bumped into the railings of Pook Bridge after the driver lost control of the wheels when he stepped on the brake reportedly due to the wet and slippery road.
"Before the accident, the bus reportedly ran in zigzag mode and the driver lost control, that's why it bumped into the railings and fell into the creek," Cocamas said.
He said they are still conducting further investigation on the incident. (With SVB/Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro/Sunnex)
