Friday, September 16, 2011
SEPTEMBER 17, Saturday, has been set as the International Coastal Clean-up (ICC) Day by virtue of Presidential Proclamation 470 dated September 15, 2003 and signed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
With this, volunteers from various sectors of society will once again gather to clean up the coastlines and waterways in designated areas in Northern Mindanao.
Spearheaded by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the annual celebration, now on its 26th year, is anchored on the theme “Trash Free Seas”.
Corazon B. Galinato, DENR regional executive director, is enjoining the public to join the cleanup in their respective communities.
Galinato said the cleanup will be undertaken along the river, shoreline and coastal areas in the region.
Expected to participate in the activity are representatives from the academe, non-government organizations, local government units, industries, civic and religious groups, other government agencies and DENR.
The clean-up areas in Cagayan de Oro City are Barangays Lapasan, Bulua, Bonbon, Puntod, Macabalan, Bayabas, Kauswagan, Cugman, Tablon, Puerto and Bugo.
The DENR offices in the provinces will also spearhead the cleanup in their respective areas of jurisdiction.
The ICC is a program of Ocean Conservancy designed to keep the ocean and waterways free from trash and safer for people and wildlife.
More than 104 countries participate in this annual activity to demonstrate their concern about marine debris problem affecting our environment.
Galinato said that some 1,910 individuals joined last year’s celebration, which covered about 22.69 kilometers of coastlines.
In last year’s ICC Day, a total of 9,308 kilos of debris was collected. (PIA)
