THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)-Northern Mindanao recently entered into a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with the province of Camiguin and the municipality of Guinsiliban for the conservation of two eco-tourism sites.

The partner local government units (LGUs) were represented by the Provincial Government of Camiguin led by Governor Jurdin Jesus M. Romualdo with Guinsiliban Mayor Helenio N. Abecia.

The first MOA was for the development of Mt. Ilihan as an eco-tourism site, while the other agreement was for the co-management of Cantaan Coastal Resource Management Project, both in the municipality of Guinsiliban.

Mt. Ilihan, located at Barangay Butay, is a three-hour climb uphill where at its peak one will have a majestic view of the bluish-green ridge of the island’s mountains and slopes. The peaceful ambiance at its peak is an ideal camping site.

Mt. Ilihan/Munting Calvaryo is also a religious site often visited during the Lenten season and considered as the last frontier in the municipality

The agreement binds both the DENR and LGUs of Camiguin and Guinsiliban to specific roles and responsibilities.

The commitment of DENR is to conduct survey mapping and assessment of Mt. Ilihan/Munting Calvaryo Forest Park and provide technical assistance in terms of protection, rehabilitation and development for effective forest resources management.

The DENR shall also assist the LGU of Guinsiliban in determining the carrying capacity on the site as an eco-tourism destination and other technical concerns such as the National Greening Program and Solid Waste Management.

For its, part the Provincial Government of Camiguin shall provide support to the project such as manpower and integrate the comprehensive management and development plan into the provincial development plan.

The Provincial Government shall also conduct monitoring and evaluation together with DENR and the LGU of Guinsiliban to enhance the operation and management of the project. (PR)
