K to 12: Beneficial or a scourge?

IS THE Enhanced Basic Education Act of 2013 or the K to 12 Act beneficial or a scourge to the Filipinos?

There are too many controversies and praises that hound this new law, however, many schools in the country have to buckle up to cope with the demands as they have already been competing globally even before the passage of the law. And in order to meet the global demands, the schools have to face the challenges that come with the K to 12 program implementation.

Emano files election protest vs Moreno

AFTER losing from his re-election bid, outgoing Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Emano filed an election protest at the Commission on Elections (Comelec) Manila through his legal counsel Friday.

Emano, through his Lawyer Francis Ku asked the Comelec Manila to recount and retabulate the official ballots and other election documents manually and visually.

Double murder raps filed vs suspects in driver’s slay

THE Jasaan town police filed a double murder case on Friday against alleged suspects responsible for the killing of a driver and his aide of a Jasaan jeepney liner on Wednesday evening on Bonifacio Street in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.

Police Senior Inspector Brian Inojaldo, Jasaan town police chief, said Wilborn Cabil, 27, a resident of Zone 2, Gusa; and Alex Redoblado, 25, of Ilaya, Upper Carmen, all of Cagayan de Oro, are charged with double murder at the Provincial Prosecutor’s Office as suspects in the killing of Doniel Salla, 30, a resident of San Martin, Villanueva and Roldan Ofema Jr., 25, a resident of Fuente, Upper Jasaan.

Some offices unaware of PST Law

SOME private companies and government offices in Cagayan de Oro City are unaware of the new law on the Philippine standard time (PST) that President Benigno Aquino III signed on Thursday since a memorandum hasn’t been circulated yet.

Some government offices here have already read about the new law in the papers, but confirmed they have not yet received any memo.

Police still on red alert after polls

THE Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) is still on full alert even after the elections.

“The election period ends on June 12. So, even though the casting of votes and many candidates have been proclaimed in the May 13 elections the alert status is still heightened,” Cocpo Chief Graciano Mijares said.

DOH holds HIV surveillance

THE Department of Health (DOH) and other agencies held a random human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) surveillance to determine the human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/Aids) cases in Cagayan de Oro City.

Since last week the Integrated HIV Behavioral and Serologic Surveillance System (IHBSSS) and the group Tingog CdeO rounded up the different areas of the city to spot and identify persons engaging in men having sex with men (MSM), aged 15 and up, to achieve its research goal of 300 respondents in a period of one month.

Teachers complain of honoraria delay

PUBLIC school teachers in the city, who served as Board of Election Inspectors (BEIs) in the recently concluded May 13 polls, are complaining of the delay in the release of their honoraria.

The teachers said they are disappointed over the disdainful treatment of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) at them citing that the P4,000 stipend isn’t enough to compensate the extra work and sleepless nights they spent in the May 13 polls.

‘Riding-in-tandem’ suspects fall

TWO suspects, who are allegedly members of the dreaded riding-in-tandem groups, were arrested Wednesday evening in Jasaan town in Misamis Oriental, police reports said.

Gas station lost P11,000 to robbery

SOME P11,000 worth of cash and valuables were carted away from a gasoline station by six unidentified suspects on Wednesday evening along Masterson Avenue in Upper Balulang in Cagayan de Oro.

Police Officer 1 (PO1) Liezel Mejos, of the Carmen police station, said the suspects, who were on board two single motorcycles without plate numbers (red and white), carted some P11,000 cash from Shell gas station’s income for the day and two cell phones of the cashier, Leah Daayata.

New wage order out in June

WAGE order 17 will soon be implemented on June, but the amount of the new wage hike can't be divulged yet pending the result of the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC) en banc meeting.

The Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) will implement this new wage order after the deliberations of the two wage petitions it will submit to NWPC for finalization.

NorMin ranks 4th in Comelec gun ban violations

THE Philippine National Police in Northern Mindanao (PNP 10) was declared as the fourth region having the most number of confiscated firearms in the Philippines since the implementation of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) gun ban for the May 13 midterm polls.

Police Superintendent Ronnie Francis Cariaga, PNP-10 spokesperson, said that as of May 16 the police regional department gathered 295 firearms of different kinds confiscated by its field personnel in different police operations.

Moreno vows to solve vendors’ woes

AS he vowed to find ways to solve the problem of the sidewalk vendors in Cogon and Carmen public markets, Mayor-elect Oscar Moreno said that sidewalk vendors cannot be displaced from their current position.

“Dili ko moingon nga dili sila mahawa pero we have to find solution sa root cause sa problema nganong anaa sila sa kadalanan, kinahanglan sulbaron ang tanang aspeto sa problema (I can’t say that they will not be transferred but we have to find a solution to the root cause of why they are on the streets. City to inspect public school canteens

THE city council’s committee on health and sanitation has strengthened its partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) as it pledges its support to DepEd’s recently launched `Brigada Eskwela 2013.’

4 hurt in ongoing Granex blaze

ILIGAN CITY -- The fire that hit a coconut oil mill in Barangay Kiwalan in this city entered on its third day, Wednesday, with four injuries and more than a hundred families leaving their homes due to the fumes from the fire site.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) identified the victims as Clint Cha, 44; Raymond Magallon 27; Vicente Ramayan, 88; and Romeo Morallas 52. They were admitted at Adventist Medical Center.

Granex conflagration rages on; fire razes P220M

ILIGAN CITY – The conflagration that hit the coconut oil mill of Granexport Manufacturing Corporation (Granex) in Barangay Kiwalan on Monday afternoon has continued to rage as another round of flame billowed from the thick smoke as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.

The fire has been raging for more than 24 hours and the damage has been pegged at P220 million.

Hydro projects may solve power shortages in M’nao

POTENTIAL hydro projects in Mindanao that can generate at least 1,093 megawatts (MW) capacity may solve the 300-450 MW power shortages in the island.

Engineer Cerael Donggay, chief executive officer of Greenergy Development Corporation and Project Director of Bulanog-Batang and Pulangi 5 Hydro Projects, said 11 small potential hydro sites could generate at least 186 MW to add to the 907 MW that big hydro plants such as Pulangi 5, Bulanog-Batang, Agus 3 and Pulangi 1,2,3 and 5 can generate.

2 killed in suffocation

NPA says 27 soldiers killed in May clashes

IN ABOUT a dozen combat operations initiated by the New People’s Army (NPA), the rebel group has counted 27 soldiers killed in action, a statement sent by the NPA to Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro via e-mail on Tuesday said.

In the statement, spokesperson of the NPA in North Central Mindanao Regional Command (NPA-NCMReCom) Allan Juanito, said since May 3 to 11, 2013, the armed rebels noted 27 casualties and many were injured on the military side, these were soldiers “who tried to destroy the growing revolutionary exercises” of the communist group.

6 marines awarded for bravery

Motorcycle driver shot dead

A “HABAL-HABAL” (motorcycle for hire) driver was shot dead along Narra St. in Reyes Village subdivision, Barangay Bugo in Cagayan de Oro City Saturday night.

Police Officer 2 (PO2) Lemuel Tecson of the Puerto police station (PS6) identified the victim as Amorsolo Corpus, 34, single, a resident of Zone 1, Sta. Ana, Tagoloan town in Misamis Oriental. Corpus sustained a single gunshot wound in the head.
