Aquino’s civil disobedience call ‘not good’

THE “disobedience call” made by President Benigno Aquino III to oust embattled Chief Justice Renato Corona have drawn negative reactions from local and national officials.
Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya said he “doesn’t favor it and will stand still on the rule of law” considering that the impeachment trial of Corona is ongoing.

“Let us not preempt the proceedings and leave it all to the impeachment court. Let the Senate decide,” Nacaya said.
Councilor Edgar Cabanlas, who from the very beginning expressed favor on the impeachment, said he is against another “People Power,” much more to Aquino’s civil disobedience call.
Cabanlas said the proper process must be observed in the impeachment trial before justice will be served.
He said the “disobedience call” causes division among the people instead of moving on whatever decisions from the impeachment trial.
“It also prolongs the agony of the people who was deprived of the services they need because of that impeachment trial,” Cabanlas said.
Meanwhile, Zambales Representative Mitos Magsaysay pointed out that Aquino’s calling for people to recreate history and wage a civil disobedience is irresponsible and desperate.
Magsaysay said while pressuring the senator-judges to vote against Corona, Aquino is conditioning the minds of the people that the Chief Justice is already guilty.
She added the President wants to railroad the process, depriving Corona of the chance to present his side when there are rules to follow.
“The role of the senator-judges is to serve the interest of the people by making their judgment based on evidence. Why can they not wait for this day to come instead of brainwashing the public and grandstanding in the media?” Magsaysay said.
She clarified that there is no shortcut to justice, or else people will just take to the streets every day and stage protest whenever they do not get their way.
Magsaysay questioned why the administration could not just focus on issues plaguing the nation such as inflation and the threat of losing foreign businesses in the country because of bills proposed in the US. (Annabelle L. Ricalde)
