THE Philippine National Police (PNP)-Northern Mindanao and Joint Task Force Panguil in Tangub City arrested a member of notorious Alferez-organized crime group believed to be operating nationwide, a report said Monday.
PNP Regional Director Jufel Adriatico said the suspect, Rommel Alferez, was nabbed after he was sighted inside the cockfight arena in Barangay 6, Tangub City, last February 25.
Police confiscated a caliber .45 pistol and ammunitions from his possession.
Alferez was arrested by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Alan Flores of the 12th Judicial Regional Region Branch 7 in Tubod, Lanao del Norte for carnapping.
According to Tangub City Police Chief Superintendent Elias Hampac, the Police Anti-Carnapping Emergency Response (Pacer) team based in Iligan City is now also looking into Alferez’s possible involvement in other crimes committed in Manila.
Records from Tangub Police showed that Alferez is the uncle of Jojo Alferez, whom police encountered last December 7, 2011 in a shootout that resulted in the arrest of Neson Balos after he was wounded.
Another member of the group, Charles Kaamino, was arrested last February 2 in Tangub City after he fired indiscriminately his caliber .45 pistol. He was later charged with illegal possession of firearm and ammunition.
Kaamino, Rommel and Jojo Alferez are believed to be operating in Cagayan de Oro, Pagadian, Dipolog and other neighboring cities, while the other members are linked to many criminal activities in Cebu and Metro Manila.
Adriatico lauded the effort of the Misamis Occidental Police Provincial Office and the joint operating units that resulted in the successful arrest of a member of the notorious Alferez group.
