Rotary club builds houses for Sendong survivors

DECEMBER 17, 2011 was the day when northern Mindanao was struck by typhoon Sendong. The tell-tale effect left thousands of lives and properties damaged and lost, particularly in the cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan.
Helping hands and assistance later poured in for the typhoon victims, ranging from medicines, food and water, clothing and temporary shelters.
True to its motto of “Service Above Self,” many Rotarians extended support, assistance, and donations to the flood victims.
For its part, the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro, under the leadership of its President Ian Mark Q. Nacaya, ventured into joint undertakings with other Rotary Clubs from other Districts and a partnership with the City Government of Cagayan de Oro headed by Mayor Vicente Y. Emano and Habitat for Humanity Philippines Director Tots Escalada for the construction of 10 safe and permanent quadruplex housing units in Barangay Indahag.
The groundbreaking was held last February 17.
To monitor the progress of the construction and set proper recording and liquidation of funds generated from donations to finance the construction of the quadriplex units, which has a cost of P360,000 translated to P90,000 per door unit, the Foundation of the Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro was reactivated under the stewardship of PDG Tinnex Jaraula (3rd from left). Among the donors are the Norfolk Sisterhood Cities of Norfolk, Virginia, U.S.A. that gave P263,642 and Orthodontists Association of the Philippines through Dr. Arnold Duterte, which extended financial assistance of P80,000.
As of June 18, the Club had completed construction of one quadruplex unit as observed by the City Engineer’s Office and is ready for turn-over to the beneficiaries and another four quadruplex units on its 98 percent completion.
The Club’s Contractor, RCCDO President-Elect Mar Paano, is just finishing the unit’s loft and installation of door knobs. By then, it will be ready for turn-over as well.
Construction of the remaining five other quadruplex units will soon commence. (PR)
