Poll body sets special registration for PWDs

A SPECIAL four-day registration for persons with disabilities (PWDs) in different barangays has been scheduled by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Cagayan de Oro to accommodate its members for the coming mid-term election in 2013.
Lawyer Aleli Ramirez, city Comelec officer, said the registration for PWDs will start on Saturday, August 11, in Brangay Macasandig.
Ramirez said their office will be closed on Monday until August 15 to visit three other barangays for the PWDs.
“We will be at the Bonbon Barangay Hall on August 13, Gusa Covered Court on August 14, and Bulua Covered Court on August 15 from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.,” Ramirez said.
The scheduled registration was the result of the agreed date by both the PWDs and the Comelec in a meeting last Friday at the City Library in Cagayan de Oro.
Milagros Maquiling, president of the Cagayan de Oro Federation of Persons with Disabilities Association Inc (Cafedpa), earlier said that more than 1,500 members of PWDs in Cagayan de Oro alone are eager and waiting to be included during the scheduled special registration for PWDs, which was postponed twice in lieu of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm) registration last month.
Maquiling expressed dismay over the seeming lack of attention given to them by the Comelec in allowing them to exercise their right to participate in the coming election.
More than 1,500 members of Cafedpa out of the 3,000 active members already reached the voting age and have not yet registered in the city.
“A lot of young PWDs have already reached the voting age but due to their condition, they find it hard to join in regular registration schedules,” Maquiling said.
Pursuant to Minute Resolution 12-0624, the Comelec will be holding a National PWD Voter Registration Day on Saturday (Auguts 11).
Through the resolution, all Comelec local officers, except Armm, will participate in the nationwide registration to encourage PWDs to register and update their records by accomplishing the Supplementary Data portion.
Special registration centers will also be designated to make the registration more accessible. (Abigail Chee Kee Malalis)
