PROSPERIDAD, Agusan del Sur -- Armed rebels belonging to Guerrilla Front 30 North Eastern Mindanao Regional Committee of the New People’s Army (NPA) burned down construction equipment of Concepcion Basic Builders Inc. in Barangay Poblacion, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur Tuesday evening.
Among the equipment burned were two dump trucks, one payloader, one backhoe, one generator set with one welding machine, one crane, one concrete vibrator and one chainsaw with an estimated damage of at least P20 million.
The equipment, owned by Arthur L. Ong-o, were reportedly being used to renovate a bridge that would link the remote town of San Miguel to major centers in the Caraga region.
Soldiers of the 36th Infantry Battalion immediately conducted pursuit operations against the NPA rebels.
An encounter ensued between the soldiers and the rebels at the vicinity of Sitio Kiskis, Siagao, San Miguel, Surigao del Sur Wednesday morning.
The firefight reportedly lasted for about 30 minutes, resulting in the death of one NPA rebel and the recovery of one sniper rifle with scope.
The soldiers also captured three persons who were believed to be NPA members. They are now under the custody of local officials.
“These two related incidents proved that the NPAs are indeed the people’s number one enemy in our fight against poverty and the country’s greatest nemesis in the attainment of a more progressive and developed nation,” said Brigadier General Romeo L. Gapuz, acting commander of the 4th Infantry Division.
Colonel Romeo Gan, commander of the 401st Infantry Brigade, condemned the latest atrocity, which hindered development in the area.
