Police welcome probe on illegal gambling

THE investigation of the Cagayan de Oro City Council on accusation that some policemen are “collectors” of protection money from illegal gambling activities is a welcome move.
“Mas maganda nga na mag-conduct ng investigation para malaman talaga ang totoo at kung sino ang mga involve (It’s better to conduct an investigation to find out who are involved),” said Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (Cocpo) chief Gerardo Rosales.
On Wednesday, City Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya headed the committee that conducted again another investigation among Cocpo members.
The issue broke out following the exposé of former Philippine National Police (PNP) regional director Conrado Laza, who said almost all policemen are “collectors” of protection money from illegal gambling, that’s why these activities could not be stopped.
Senior Superintendent Rosales said he had not received any information that some Cocpo officials are into this kind of illegal activities.
Last week, Nacaya’s committee called all the station commanders of the 10 police stations in the city and ordered them to crack down all illegal lotto outlets operating in the city.
