HUNDREDS of indigenous people (IP) from Bukidnon, Gingoog and Lanao province carrying placards marched while chanting toward the public cemetery in Cagayan de Oro Monday as IP leader Gilbert Paborada was laid to rest.

Paborada, 45, was shot to death Wednesday last week by unidentified assailants in Barangay Puntod, Cagayan de Oro. He succumbed to eight gunshot wounds in different parts of his body.

Paborada is a Higaonon leader and chairperson of Pangalasag (which means indigenous shield), a community-based IP group in Opol, Misamis Oriental.

Pangalasag is reportedly at the forefront of a struggle against oil palm plantation in Opol town.

The IPs are demanding justice for Paborada as they vowed to exhaust all means to put the culprits behind bars.

Reports said Paborada just came back from Bagocboc village in Opol when two motorcycle-riding men shot him after embarking from a motorela he was riding.

Members of Pangalasag have been reportedly receiving threats. (Abigail Chee Kee Malalis)
