AT LEAST P200,000 worth of properties were damaged in a fire in Barangay Lapasan, Cagayan de Oro, Thursday evening, hours before the city greeted the first day of the annual celebration of Fire Prevention Month.
No one was reported hurt in the incident, officials of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) said.
District Fire Marshal Shirley Teleron said the fire destroyed the two-storey lodging house owned by Jeffrey and Mary Ann Advincula located in Agora, Barangay Lapasan, around 9:34 p.m.
Initial investigation showed that the fire started at the second floor of the lodging house and lasted for around 20 minutes.
At least four fire trucks and private fire volunteers responded immediately and prevented the fire from spreading to adjacent houses.
Arson investigators said they have yet to determine what caused the fire, although initial report disclosed that it was due to an unattended rice cooker.
With the start of Fire Prevention Month on Friday, authorities asked the public to be extra careful. (Annabelle L. Ricalde)
