INVESTMENT and employment opportunities in Cagayan de Oro City were the highlights of the Orobest Expo held Friday at the Lim Ket kai Center.
Orobest chairman Jeffrey Ang said the activity was created by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Oro Chamber) to establish partnership of local businesses and to promote their businesses.
“This is a very important event especially that the month of October is the business month and we are on our 7th year of doing this activity,” said Ang.
Oro Chamber president Efren Uy said the expo “promotes the products and services not only in Mindanao but also in the country.”
Uy added that the expo showcases the products of Northern Mindanao.
“So far, we in the Oro Chamber remained optimistic and on a positive mood amid the disheartening events that took place in Zamboanga,” said Uy.
The expo activity was themed “Strengthening the rebuilding process through entrepreneurship and public-private partnership.”
Part of the Orobest Expo is a three-day job fair to cater to the unemployed workforce in the region.
“We facilitated the three-day job fair that was participated in by companies that are mostly members of the Oro Chamber,” said Kathleen Sorilla, manager of the city’s Public Employment and Services Office (Peso).
Sorilla said that as of 2:00 p.m. Friday, Peso recorded 27 female applicants and 14 male applicants.
Malou Marquez, human resource personnel of Megaworld Corporation, said she is looking forward for more applicants in the coming days.
“So far, the applicants are competitive and qualified,” said Marquez, referring to the jobseekers she interviewed.
Robert delos Reyes from Stargate said they have approved two applicants for final interview out of the 12 jobseekers interviewed.
“We have approved two applicants for final interview, and they are applying for the position of cook and bartender,” said Delos Reyes.
Education graduate Jurilou Macalam came all the way from Manolo Fortich, Bukidnon hoping to get lucky and land a job in Orobest’s job fair.
“I found out about this job fair in the internet. It was posted in Jobstreet.com and in Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro’s website,” said Macalam.
She added that although there are no teaching jobs available, she is willing to work on anything that is available in the job fair.
Marketing officer of Cagayan de Oro College-Phinma Royce Arellano said they have a lot of scholarship slots available to qualified students.
“We are expecting around a thousand scholars this year,” Arellano said, adding that last year they have accommodated thousands of scholars.
Arellano said that there are nongovernment organizations that are willing to help and connect with the school to accommodate scholarship grants.
The scholarship program is part of their ‘Handog Kaibigan’ program that offers educational grants.
There are also other schools in the expo that offered scholarship grants.
