FOUR were apprehended carrying unregistered guns and deadly weapons in a checkpoint conducted by the Cagayan de Oro Police Office (Cocpo) following the Commission on Elections (Comelec) declaration of the gun ban in the upcoming barangay elections on October 28.
The tight security measures have been implemented to complement the 45-day gun ban pursuant to Comelec Resolution No. 9517 which prescribes September 28 to November 12 as the days when people are not allowed to carry firearms unless exempted.
“Four people were caught violating the Comelec gun ban,” said Cocpo Operations and Plans branch head Lemuel Gonda.
Gonda said two of them were caught carrying firearms without proof of license, and the other two were caught in possession of deadly weapons.
“We will continue our police operations,” said Gonda, adding they will search the houses of people with firearms and even check individuals, even after the successful arrests to ensure the security of the city.
As part of police operations, Cocpo is implementing the “Op Bakal” that intends to confiscate deadly weapons other than firearms that are usually used in committing crimes.
“Although there are cases of robbery, stabbing and other crimes in the city, we will do our best to keep the people safe especially that the elections are fast approaching,” said Gonda. (With SVB)
