MARAWI CITY -- A feud between two families claimed five lives and wounded others in the boundary of Bayang and Lumbatan in Lanao del Sur on Wednesday, the military reported on Thursday.
Colonel Glen Macasero, commanding officer of 103rd Infantry Brigade based in Kampo Ranao, Marawi City, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that in the morning of October 16 during a Maranaw wedding rites in sitio Kumangkale, Lige village of Bayang, two warring families incidentally met that ensued in a firefight.
Macasero said three were killed on the spot from both sides and wounding other family members between Diamla Dimaapao and Tuba Bila-o families.
"While the army troops from the 51st Infantry Battalion responded to pacify the family feud (‘rido’), on its way to the crime scene, the troops on board a military vehicle met at least 30 armed men (who) served as reinforcement to one of the families but unfortunately the lawless elements opened fire to the responding military troops," Macasero said.
"The military troops dismounted from their vehicle and responded to the firefight. Two armed men were killed, three were captured with three M16 rifles, in which one of them was wounded," he added.
Macasero said there were no fatalities from the military side except one injured soldier.
He said an appropriate case was already filed against the suspects in coordination with the Philippine National Police especially that the incident took place within the gun ban implementation period.
Barangay chiefs killed
At least three election-related killing incidents were reported and recorded by the 103rd Brigade command since October 11.
Macasero said on October 11, Bansayan barangay chief Salman Abdulrahman was ambushed and killed while two of her companions were wounded.
The victims were on board a pick-up truck on their way home after Abdulrahman filed her candidacy for the second term.
On October 12, at around 6:00 a.m., another candidate for barangay chief was shot dead with an M16 rifle in Barangay Oriental Beta in Lumba Caunayan town.
On October 17, Barangay Sambolawan, Taraka town, Barangay Ririk chief Hadji Mohammad Moshori Tomimbang was shot dead around 5 a.m. while on his way to an early morning prayer in a mosque, Macasero added.
