Armed men torch school building in Lanao Sur-A A +A

ILIGAN CITY -- Unidentified armed men torched an elementary school building in the interior village of Darimbang, Tagoloan town in Lanao del Norte at around 11:30 p.m. on October 22.
Lt. Colonel Danilo G. Ibon, commanding officer of the 4th Mechanize Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro in an interview Thursday morning, said that one of the two-room school buildings was damaged and burned the educational materials stored in one of the rooms.
The armed men used dried coconut leaves to set the building on fire.
Ibon said the room was occupied and shared by grade one and four students. "There are only two school buildings in barangay Darimbang which were supposed to be utilized these coming barangay elections on October 28,” he said.
Ibon said, the armor company was sent to reinforce the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) personnel, DepEd representative, Philippine National Police and barangay officials and verified the incident.
Ibon said: "The burning of the classroom is an election-related incident."
The incident is the first election-related violence monitored by authorities in the province in the coming barangay elections on Monday.
He said the nine armor tanks and three military vehicles deployed during the Zamboanga City siege since September 10 had returned to its battalion headquarters in Camp Pintoy, in Suarez, Iligan City Thursday.
"By Friday morning the troops will be deployed for election duty. The four armor tanks will be sent to Lanao del Sur and two other tanks for Dipolog City. These are additional deployments apart from the usual deployments in Iligan City and in Lanao del Norte," Ibon added.
In a data signed by lawyer Cirilo E. Nala, the provincial elections officer, obtained by Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro, Lanao del Norte has 462 barangays with 932 candidates vying for barangay chairmen and 6,175 filed their candidacies for village councilors.
Meanwhile in Iligan City, there are 128 village chief bets and 1,068 candidates for councilors.
Police Senior Superintendent Madid Paitao, police provincial director of Lanao del Norte initialy identified area of concerns in the coming barangay elections namely the towns of Tangkal, Munai, Poona Piagapo, Salvador, Nunungan and Tagoloan, respectively.
