ILIGAN CITY – Police Offiicer 1 Rey Borinaga would have been home to his family and celebrated his 34th birthday on Wednesday, but a fire that razed the Commission on Elections (Comelec) here trapped him that resulted to his demise.
Lawyer Annaliza Barrido, Iligan city Comelec officer, said Borinaga was on duty from 8 p.m. Tuesday until 9 a.m. Wednesday. “We had a small celebration for his birthday,” Barrido said.
Around 2:15 at dawn Wednesday, the city Comelec was allegedly set ablaze by Silao “Lumboy” Conto of Barangay Rogongon who lobbed a bottle of gasoline to adjacent stores where the fire started until it reached the city Comelec office.
Senior Fire Inspector Rommel Villafuerte, the city fire marshal, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that the damaged has been pegged at P800,000 while pertinent Comelec documents and other office properties were turned into ashes.
It took two hours for the firemen to put out the fire.
Barrido said: "All of the Comelec documents, office computers and three personal laptops used to augment our work to record the results of the barangay elections and payroll were totally damaged."
"I will inform the Comelec en banc of the fire incident, so we could reconstruct all the records" Barrido said.
Iligan City Police Inspector Robert Delos Reyes said the investigation is still in progress while the suspect is detained at police precinct 5.
The suspect claimed responsibility in the alleged arson. "Nasuko ko sa Comelec kay midagan ko ug kapitan wa ko ka daug" (I was mad with the Comelec. I sought election for the barangay captain, but I did not win,” he said.
Conto said his two brothers accompanied him when he did the crime.
Reyes said Conto might undergo a psychiatric test to check his mental health.
Barrido assured Comelec will check if Conto did really file his candidacy, “this would be part of the investigation."
Janice Borinaga demands justice for her husband’s death. “This is difficult to accept. No one was able to help him. The help came too late,” Borinaga’s wife said.
