AFTER being sworn into office, Cagayan de Oro City’s village chiefs are preparing to elect their leader on December 9.
Rene Burdeos, Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Northern Mindanao regional director, said the chiefs from 80 barangays will gather in one venue to choose the new Association of Barangay Councils (ABC) president who will sit as an ex officio member of the City Council.
Burdeos said under the Liga ng mga Barangay election code, the village chiefs will choose among themselves either through secret balloting or raising of hands.
Burdeos said the ABC president plays an important role in the association, as the chosen leader he or she will be the voice of the group in regards to projects, welfare and concerns in the barangays.
Two village chiefs -- Alam Lim of Barangay 40 and Jocelyn Rodriguez of Nazareth -- will vie for the coveted position.
Mayor Oscar Moreno has campaigned for Rodriguez as the next ABC president.
Rodriguez’s brothers Representatives Rufus and Maximo Jr. joined forces with Moreno during the local elections last May.
Moreno said Rodriguez has the capacity to lead the barangay chiefs as compared to her rival.
For her part, Rodriguez said she is confident to win the position.
Rodriguez said she will act as “bridge” between the village chiefs and the mayor regardless of political affiliation.
She added she will make it a point that all concerns in the barangay level will be addressed.
Lim said if given the chance to become the ABC president, he will ensure that every barangay will have their own health care facilities.
Lim said he will in fact even work with Moreno for the implementation of barangay projects.
