A SOLDIER was killed while another one was seriously wounded when about 10 armed men believed to be members of the New People’s Army (NPA) ambushed a military truck in Namnam, a hinterland village in San Fernando town in Bukidnon late afternoon on Saturday, the military said Monday.
Captain Christian Uy, spokesperson of the Philippine Army’s 4th Infantry Division (4ID) in Camp Evangelista, identified the fatality as Private First Class Jonathan Andres and the wounded as Corporal Dexter Fontanares.
Uy said Andres’ body was sent to his home in Luzon on Sunday morning, while Fontanares, who was hit in the head, is still recuperating at a nearby hospital in Maramag town also in Bukidnon.
The firefight lasted about 10 minutes, then, the rebels withdrew, he said.
The military truck was filled with around 50 to 60 soldiers, Uy added.
“Igo lang gyud sila nakapabuto dagan na dayon (The rebels fired at the truck and then hurriedly left the area),” he said.
Uy said there was no reported killed or injured in the NPA side, but traces of bloodstains in the area indicated that some of the rebels might have been wounded.
He said the army troopers were heading back to their camp in Barangay Bangakaw after conducting combat operations when they were attacked.
The army official said soldiers in the area are pursuing the armed rebels.
“Padayon ang atong combat operations sa area aron usab mahatagan ug hustisya ang kamatayon sa atong mga kauban,” Uy said.
Uy has admitted that rebels do exist in the area, but are mobile that soldiers could hardly get them.
